HELLO ALL!

We would like to welcome you this Fall to an exciting year ahead at the Women's Centre. It is also our pleasure to announce that this year is really special for us since it is going to be our 5th anniversary! Thanks to the Student Levy of Sept 2007, the Women’s Centre is now being supported by all SMU students. Thank you all for your continued support!

We would like to begin by introducing ourselves. The Centre has 3 new coordinators - Georgia Schurman and Maureen Kimani as internal coordinators and Dr. Anupam Pandey as the External Coordinator. You are welcome to contact us directly through office hours of the Centre or by writing to us at our e-mail address.

Just briefly – we would like to mention the services we provide – other than being a “safe” space for women on campus, you could walk in if you would like to browse through and borrow from our stimulating library collection of books, magazines and videos, enjoy a cup of organic coffee provided to us by our generous donors, “Just Us!”; need free tampons, pads or condoms, if you would just like to meet other women or just relax in a comfy, cozy space on campus!

We kicked off the semester with a hugely successful Society Expo and were delighted by the support that we received as so many of you signed up as volunteers. We are soon going to be conducting volunteer training / orientation and shall be contacting our volunteers for the same, individually and as a group.

The Women’s Centre is looking for Board members who want to be part of the decision-making for the Centre regarding budget, programming, events’, etc.
Board members are required to put in 4 hours a month and meet every other Friday from 12.30 p.m. to 2.30 p.m.
All those interested are welcome to drop in any time the Centre is open to pick up an application form for Board volunteers.

We sent out our first newsletter detailing relevant campus and community events and shall be sending out this newsletter twice in a month in order to keep our contacts up to date with the latest happenings and gatherings with respect to feminist and other related causes.

We hosted our Open House which added to our list of volunteers as well as Board applications and gave our patrons a chance to check us out!

We look forward to hearing from you and hope that the year ahead is going to be a productive and exciting one! We shall keep you posted about all that is going on at the SMU Women’s Centre through this blog and hope that you shall keep dropping by, at the Centre and the blog, and tell us more about what you think about us, and what you need from us. We are here for you and because of you! Its your Centre - so come and utilize "your" space and enjoy it!
