Take Back the Night 2008: Thank You!

Our 2nd Annual Alternative Take Back the Night March was last night. We call it an "alternative" because we started organizing it to fill a gap that the other Take Back the Night didn't fill. Some organizations in the city expressed the need for a march that is "women's only". It's great that male allies want to march in support, but there are women who are not comfortable with this.

So last year, along with Actiongirls, we created a trans-positive, female-identified persons only march. In 2007, we started in the Halifax Commons and marched through the North End (photos on flickr). This year we started on campus and marched through South End neighbourhoods.

We'll post more about how the march went, along with photos and videos, but for now:

A big Thank You! to everyone who made the march possible!

To our fantastic speakers.
To those who provided entertainment.
To Leonard Preyra (MLA for Halifax Citadel - Sable Island) for financial support and for making the Women's Council House available to us.
To our volunteers for making posters.

and perhaps most importantly:

To everyone who came out! It wouldn't be a march without you. We saw a lot of new faces and community members, which is awesome. Hopefully this event will keep getting bigger and better with each year.
